Three Palestinian terror suspects detained on southern border as agents complain about lack of resources

As the New York Post reported this week, three Palestinian terrorism suspects were detained on the southern border earlier this month.

The report said the terrorists “may have links to terrorist organizations.” One of the migrants had photos on his phone that showed “a masked man holding an AK-47 rifle,” according to law enforcement.

The Post said federal authorities in the San Diego sector detained three Palestinians and a Turkish migrant on suspicion of links to the terrorist group. They were among dozens of migrants who surrendered to border agents, the sources said.

The investigation into the migrants is ongoing. They have been turned over to ICE, and the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force is involved.

The incident highlights the security threats coming into the U.S. through the southern border, especially in San Diego, according to the Post. Overtaxed Border Patrol agents, lacking the tools to fully vet migrants, rely largely on U.S. watch lists and terror resources, without access to international databases.

One agent said, “Knowing who these guys are, we don’t have access to anything international. We really don’t, and it sucks.”

“I wanted to get into the Border Guard and protect against terrorists. And it’s like, well, I probably let terrorists into the country” he added.

“The San Diego Field Office Intelligence Unit assesses that individuals inspired by or responding to the current Israel-Hamas conflict may attempt to enter or leave the Middle East combat zone via a circuitous route through the southwest border,” an alert sent to border agents in the area said earlier.

“Ideologically motivated foreign fighters or mercenaries may attempt to conceal travel to or from the U.S. to or from Middle Eastern countries via Mexico,” it reads.

Post notes that migrants crossed the border shortly after the Biden administration introduced new asylum restrictions that have loopholes that allow many to stay. San Diego sees many migrants from more than 100 countries that do not accept deportees, making them exempt from the restrictions.

As a result, migrants from regions like India, China and ISIS-recruiting Central Asia are flocking to San Diego. Despite overall slower migration due to the new policy and summer heat, agents remain wary of terrorists entering the country and those who have already been released due to limited information from their home countries.
