Joshua Lanchester was charged with second-degree murder

The New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office said a man has been charged with murder after he murdered his grandmother with a hammer in Easton, New Jersey, on Saturday.

Joshua Lanchester, 23, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder after New Hampshire State Police found his grandmother dead in her home, Attorney General John M. Formella’s office said in a statement.

State police were responding to a 911 call for medical assistance at the residence at 11:41 a.m. when they found 76-year-old Cynthia Lanchester dead on the ground. Authorities said Lanchester appeared to have died from a blunt force wound.

State police also encountered Lanchester while visiting the home. He was arrested on Saturday evening.

Easton is a rural town in northern New Hampshire, about six miles west of Interstate 93, within Franconia Notch State Park.

Formella’s office said Lanchester is being held without bail and is expected to be arraigned Monday in Littleton District Court. The grandmother’s autopsy is scheduled for Sunday.
