A man is dead after a police shooting in east Mesa

MESA, AZ (AZ Family) — A man is dead following a police shooting near an east Mesa neighborhood early Sunday morning.

Mesa police say the shooting happened near 104th Street and Bramble Avenue, north of Broadway Road, around 2 a.m.

Authorities say the officer tried to stop a man riding a bicycle closer to Broadway and Cheshire, about a quarter-mile from the scene.

Investigators say the man, identified only as 37, ran into the canal and was later spotted in an empty washroom. At that point, the man allegedly pulled out a gun and pointed at the officer, who fired a shot.

Mesa Police and Fire Department arrived on scene to provide first aid, and the suspect was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

Police confirmed that no officers were injured and no one else was wanted in connection with the incident.

The Chandler Police Department will be leading the investigation as part of the East Valley Critical Response Team. This is standard protocol in officer-involved shootings and is subject to review by an outside agency.

No other information has been released.

This is the 42nd officer-involved shooting in the Valley and 69th in the state in 2024.
