Two stalkers get five-year jail term after a girl in UP was forced to drop out of school

BAREILLY: A local court in UP sentenced two convicts to five years in jail after a 17-year-old class 11 student was forced to abandon her education due to constant humiliation and trauma inflicted by perpetrators, who tried to sexually assault her while she was on her way to school for her exams in 2015.
District counsel (DGC) Brajesh Kumar Pandey told TOI: “Balram Singh and Manoj Singh (in their 30s) tried to rape a minor girl on April 27, 2015, while she was going to school. After the ordeal, the girl dropped out of her studies. out of fear and did not complete her exams. Her family said the accused continued to torment her by sending obscene messages to her phone, forcing her father to file a case with Neemgaon police station. B (use of criminal force against a woman with intent to undress her) and 506 (criminal intimidation) along with the Pocso Act in court in December 2016. The suspects were arrested but granted bail.
Pandey added: “There were also gaps in the police investigation. The girl’s statement under CrPC section 164 was not recorded on time and the sequence of events was probably wrong. Despite the shoddy report, the Additional District and Sessions Court (Pocso) Judge Rahul Singh, Lakhimpur Kheri, took into consideration the survivor’s testimony and the evidence presented, leading to the conviction of both the accused on Friday.
The punishment – five years’ rigorous imprisonment – was “relatively mild” as it was their first crime in official documents, he said, adding that the convicts were fined Rs 7,000 each, and the court also ordered compensation for the victim .
