Gurugram Police has filed a case against WhatsApp officials for not cooperating with the investigation

The Gurugram Police has filed a case against the directors and officers of WhatsApp after the app refused to provide information about three accounts in connection with an investigation.

According to the police, while investigating the case, the Gurugram police had sent a notice to WhatsApp through mail on July 17, asking for details about the accounts. WhatsApp, however, did not comply and instead raised objections in an illegal manner.

On July 25, police sent another detailed request for information regarding some mobile phone numbers, but WhatsApp again did not respond by August 28. Despite repeated follow-up, WhatsApp failed to share the requested information with police.

Police said that WhatsApp’s non-cooperation is helping the accused in the case. In this regard, a case was registered on Saturday at the Cyber Crime East Police Station in Gurugram against the directors and local officers of WhatsApp under Sections 223(A), 241, 249(C) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act and the Information Technology Act .

“Despite being legally obliged under applicable national law to provide the requested information, WhatsApp management breached legal instructions by failing to provide the requested information,” police said in a statement.
