Ten people died when a gas station exploded in the Dagestan region of Russia

MOSCOW (Reuters) – The Ministry of Emergency Situations said an explosion at a gas station in Dagestan in Russia’s Caspian Sea region on Friday killed 10 people, including two children, on Friday.

A ministry statement published on the Telegram messaging app said 11 people were injured in the explosion near the regional capital Makhachkala. It said rescue teams had recovered bodies from the rubble and brought the fire under control.

A health ministry official told Russian news agencies that eight people were being treated in hospital, including one in serious condition.

Regional energy operator Dagenergo said the explosion damaged “energy facilities” and caused partial power disruptions in nearby districts.

The local branch of the Investigative Committee, which deals with serious crimes in Russia, said it had opened a criminal case and was investigating the circumstances of the incident.
