Many people died in a plane crash at Wright Brothers National Memorial First Flight Airport

MANTEO, N.C. (AP) – Multiple people died when a single-engine plane crashed Saturday afternoon in a wooded area at Wright Brothers National Memorial First Flight Airport, the National Park Service said.

The crash occurred at 5 p.m., when, according to eyewitnesses, the plane was trying to land at the airport, the park service said in a press release.

The Park Service reported that the plane caught fire after the crash. The Kill Devil Hills Fire Department and other local fire departments extinguished the fire.

The park service advised that the airport was closed until further notice.

The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the incident. The Federal Aviation Administration was also notified.

The Park Service announced that Wright Brothers National Memorial will be closed on Sunday.
