Marion County Sheriff’s Deputy ‘Accidentally’ Shot Girl, Charged with Murder

OCALA, Fla. (WCJB) – A Marion County sheriff’s deputy accused of shooting his girlfriend has been charged with murder.

According to Ocala Police Department officials, officers responded to a home in the Highlands neighborhood around 11 p.m. Thursday after receiving a call from Marion County Sheriff’s Deputy Leslie Dale Boileau.

Boileau told 911 operators he accidentally shot his girlfriend, Polina Wright, 25. Officers found the victim dead with a gunshot wound to the forehead. They also found a handgun and a rifle.

The deputy told officers he and Wright were cleaning and “dry-firing” their weapons. During a rifle demonstration, Boileau says he “accidentally” fired the loaded weapon, killing the woman.

Police say evidence found at the scene confirms his version of events.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” said Police Chief Mike Balken. “The Ocala Police Department is working with the State’s Attorney’s Office to ensure justice is served.”

Boileau was arrested and charged with murder. He was fired from the sheriff’s office where he had served for eight years.

Sheriff Woods said, “We are heartbroken for the victim’s family and friends. Tens of thousands of law enforcement officers do their jobs commendably every day. But unfortunately, the tragic actions of one are felt throughout the law enforcement community. The Ocala Police Department has the support of my office as they continue to investigate this tragic incident.”

Under Florida law, mugshots of law enforcement officers are not subject to disclosure in public records.
