Brunei soldier dies in motorcycle accident in Keningau

KOTA KINABALU: A Royal Brunei soldier was killed when his powerful motorcycle collided with a vehicle travelling in a motorbike convoy in Sabah’s Keningau district.

Sergeant Majir Mohammad Joeriman Abdul Latif was rushed to the district hospital following the incident which occurred at around 10am on Saturday (July 20) at KM39 Jalan Keningau-Tambunan.

However, the 40-year-old died from serious injuries around five hours later.

Keningau police chief Inspector Yampil Anak Garai said the victim was part of a convoy along with four other motorcyclists.

He said they were going to Sandakan to attend the East Coast Motorcycle Festival.

He added that when they arrived at the scene of the potential accident, a four-wheel drive vehicle driven by a 70-year-old man emerged from the intersection onto the main road.

“The victim attempted to avoid the collision by swerving to the right but instead hit the front right side of the vehicle,” he said when contacted on Sunday (July 21).

Inspector Yampil said the victim fell under the vehicle and her motorcycle landed in the right lane.

“He was taken to Keningau Hospital but was pronounced dead at 2.56pm by a doctor in the emergency department,” he said.

He added that the driver of the four-wheel drive vehicle was detained for questioning under section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
