New York State Man Dies After Falling Into Compactor

A freak accident at an industrial plant killed a New York man Wednesday afternoon, officials say. Often when people think of dangerous jobs, they think of areas like law enforcement, power line work, lumberjacks, farming and construction. But this latest fatal accident happened at a paper mill.

Workplace Deaths in New York State

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were a total of 247 fatal work-related injuries in New York state in 2021. The bureau reports that there were 5,190The total number of deaths nationwide, as of 2021, includes all sectors.

A striking example is the story that made national headlines in June 2024 when The New York Post reported that two off-duty volunteer firefighters died after falling into a tanker truck full of manure.

Authorities said the accident occurred at Champion Road Farm in the village of Clinton, New York, in Oneida County.

New York State Man Dies After Falling Into Compactor

WNYT reports that a 42-year-old Milton, Saratoga County, man died after falling into a paper press early Wednesday afternoon at Cottrell Paper Company, according to The Times Union.

Officials say the man was extricated from the plane by firefighters and emergency medical personnel, though he was later pronounced dead at the scene. The Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office says the crash remains under investigation.

According to statistics from the National Safety Council, 363 deaths at work were recorded in the manufacturing industry in 2022.
