Kolkata doctor murdered, raped: Doctors continue protest at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital

Students and junior doctors continue to protest at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital over the murder and alleged sexual assault of their female colleague that took place on August 9 in the city of Kolkata in West Bengal.

The incident caused shock throughout the country.

Doctors have organised protests in many cities of the country like Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Mumbai.

The case was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation by the state police following an order of the Calcutta High Court.

Earlier on August 9, a trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered while on duty at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, triggering nationwide strikes and protests by the medical community.

On August 14, the protest site and the hospital premises in RG Kar were vandalised by a mob, prompting security personnel to disperse the crowd. To maintain law and order, the Kolkata Police imposed Section 163 on the premises of the medical college and RG Kar Hospital for seven days from August 18. In view of the ongoing protests, the Kolkata Police imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita of 2023 (formerly Section 144 of the CrPC) on the premises of the medical college and hospital for seven days from August 18.
