World Matchplay History

Since the first edition of the World Matchplay in 1994, when Larry Butler defeated Dennis Priestley, this major PDC tournament has produced only 12 different winners.

Unsurprisingly, the most dominant player in the tournament’s 28-year history is Phil Taylor, who has won 16 titles – the last of which came in a farewell appearance in 2017 – while Michael van Gerwen and Rod Harrington are the only players to have lifted the trophy more than once.

Power completed the first ever nine-pitch throw broadcast live on British television at the 2002 World Matchplay, a feat he repeated in 2014 to win Blackpool a seventh consecutive title.

A year earlier, in his final win over Adrian Lewis, he had achieved an incredible three-shot average of 111.23.

Taylor’s seven-year winning streak, which spanned from 2008 to 2014, ended in 2015 when Michael van Gerwen beat James Wade 18-12, and followed that up with another victory 12 months later.

The Dutchman was the favourite to defend his title for a third time, but Taylor had other plans and knocked him out en route to winning a thrilling 16th title before retiring.

The 2018 final proved to be one of the most dramatic in the tournament’s history, with Gary Anderson claiming his first title by defeating Mensur Suljovic 21-18, having previously defeated Joe Cullen by nine darts.

Rob Cross, Dimitri Van den Bergh, Peter Wright and Nathan Aspinall are other recent players to have their names on the trophy.
