Jay Leno says “everything is OK” 2 years after fire and motorcycle accident. Update

Brighter days lie ahead for TV legend Jay Leno.

The former “Tonight Show” host opened up to E! on the red carpet about his road to recovery following a November 2022 accident in which he suffered severe burns when flames erupted while working on one of his vintage cars.

“That’s good. Everything is fine. I can’t complain,” Leno said, adding a dash of his trademark humor while discussing his life while touring his comedy: “I just write jokes, tell jokes and get tested. A very simple process.”

On Monday, he attended a ceremony honoring his surgeon, Dr. Peter Grossman, with an award for excellence in medicine at the Daytime Beauty Awards 2024. At the time of the accident, Leno Grossman, medical director of the Grossman Burn Center, provided an update on Leno’s condition to the press.

Grossman said at the time that Leno was injured while working under a car in a Burbank garage where Leno keeps his famous car collection. When Leno was pulled from under the car, he had “pretty bad burns” to his face, arms and chest.

Then, in January 2023, just months after suffering second- and third-degree burns to his body, Leno revealed to the Las Vegas Review Journal that he had broken several bones in a motorcycle accident on January 17.

“I was knocked off my bike, so I broke my collarbone. I have two broken ribs. I have two broken kneecaps,” Leno said. He also told the website that he is “very happy” in his life thanks to his long-time love, Mavis, who is currently battling dementia.

“I was very lucky. I have been married to the same woman for 45 years,” Leno said. In terms of relationship tips, he didn’t say that couples shouldn’t “be silly” – that’s quite simple.

Jay Leno’s health update comes after he was named conservator of his wife Mavis’ estate in April

At the time of the accident, Grossman said that “Leno’s burns are quite severe and it’s a problem that we need to address and make sure he heals properly.” Leno underwent surgical excision and transplantation and required additional procedures.

Leno’s comments come months after he was named conservator of wife Mavis Leno’s estate amid the philanthropist’s battle with dementia.

Leno, who filed for conservatorship in a Los Angeles court in January, was granted consideration at an April hearing, according to court documents obtained by USA TODAY.

“The court finds by clear and convincing evidence that injunctive relief is necessary and appropriate because (Mavis Leno) is incapable of caring for her financial affairs and is subject to undue influence,” the minutes read. “Conservation is the least restrictive alternative needed to protect (Mavis).”
